OSY Group receive financial backing for shelf-life tech

Innovate UK has awarded funding to OSY Group as part of its Better Food for All programme.

Launched January this year, the Innovate UK competition was open to UK registered businesses developing innovative solutions that address nutrition challenges. The contest allowed organisations to apply for a share of up to £20 million over three strands:

  • Better Food for All: Innovation for improved nutrition, early-stage
  • Better Food for All: Innovation for improved nutrition, mid-stage (this stand)
  • Better Food for All: Innovation for improved nutrition, late-stage

Taking home funding, the Manchester-based OSY Group was recognised for its technology which helps to extend food shelf-life and reduce global waste.

It’s estimated that more than 15m tonnes of food waste is created in the UK annually, with an excess of 6.6m tonnes per year generated in the home.

OSY’s goal is to be a driving force in reducing this, working alongside industry leaders both in the UK and overseas.

The funding follows successful development and rigorous trials of the technology with a leading UK grocer and soft-fruit producer, validating the efficacy and potential of the solution.

The financial backing will now allow OSY to expand the technology’s application into other food types.

Commenting on the Group’s success, its CEO Marc Braterman said: "We are absolutely delighted with this recognition from Innovate UK. Meanwhile, free-from and vegan chocolate brand NOMO has struck up a partnership with Bower to help incentivise recycling.
