The Samworth Brothers’ plant-based food brand Revolution Kitchen in Melton Mowbray has begun a formal consultation regarding its potential closure.

Food Manufacture has been informed that Revolution Kitchen in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire has begun a formal consultation with its colleagues regarding its possible closure.

“We very much regret that we are consulting with colleagues regarding the potential closure of our Revolution Kitchen site in Pate Road, Melton Mowbray. No decisions have been made as yet,” a representative of Samworth Brothers told Food Manufacture.

In an announcement from its managing director, market decline and, consequently, significant losses were flagged as the reasoning behind this move.

The consultation process is expected to take at least 45 days to complete and during this time feasible alternatives to closure will be explored. If none emerge during this consultation period, the Group will move into individual consultations to discuss potential alternative employment opportunities within the wider organisation, and individual redundancy terms and conditions.

The announcement went onto read that in the event of a closure, it is hoped there will be a good number of opportunities which we see Revolution Kitchen members redeployed elsewhere in the Leicestershire area.

“In the event of a closure, it is hoped there will be opportunities for a good number of individuals to redeploy to one of our many other sites in the Leicestershire area.”

The statement concluded that the decision had not been in haste and that it must be recognised that despite significant investment and commitment from the Revolution Kitchen team, they do not believe it to be possible to make it a sustainable brand for the future.

This news follows a string of other potential closures and shutdowns across the sector, including alternative proteins manufacturer Plant & Bean, as well as the recent rescue of Meatless Farm which currently owes over £2m following its administration.
